What Is Neurofeedback in Meridian ID?

Functional Medicine Meridian ID What Is Neurofeedback

Are you familiar with the term Neurofeedback or Biofeedback? Whether you said yes or no, there are a lot of misconceptions about this brain based therapy tool used in our Meridian ID chiropractic clinic.

First, who actually may benefit from this therapy?

  • ADHD
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Dyslexia
  • Autism
  • Concussion

If you’re thinking that there are a lot of different conditions and symptoms that may benefit then you are correct.

How Does Neurofeedback Work In Meridian ID?

Neurofeedback is a popular form of Biofeedback that helps to regulate brain function. It does this by evaluating brain activity in real-time by looking at brain waves. The goal is to get brain waves within a healthy range. When this occurs the individual receives a stimulus to let them know it is where it should be. The goal is to seek more stimuli.

Brain waves are obtained by wearing a cap like this one.

To paint a better picture of how Neurofeedback therapy looks for children; we use a streamer which dims the screen and reduces the volume of videos they are able to watch when the brain waves are not within an acceptable range. The goal for the child is to identify the state that allows them to best watch a video as this means their brain waves are within a healthy range.

Mistakes Not To Make

There are many mistakes I see individuals make when deciding to use this therapy or not.

Here are three to avoid:

  • Not having a QEEG
  • Using poor quality systems
  • One dimensional approach to health

The first and biggest mistake is not having a QEEG performed before deciding to do the therapy.

QEEG stands for Quantitative Electroencephalogram. This is a computerized analysis of all the brain waves: delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma.

For example with ADHD there are different patterns of brain waves that may be seen. One is having excess theta waves in the front part of the brain. If a QEEG is completely normal, there may still be some benefits with doing Neurofeedback but the success rate will go down.

The second mistake is using poor-quality systems. Two of the best systems are Neuroguide and Brainmaster. If a poor quality system is being used then the absence of results could simply be due to the system and not because neurofeedback doesn’t work.

The last mistake is trying to make things too simple. Let me explain, Neurofeedback is a way to modulate and improve brain function. Are there other aspects of brain function that haven’t been evaluated? Also, what would negatively impact brain function?

Different factors that should be considered and evaluated:

  • Eye movements
  • Balance
  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Nutrition
  • Immune Health
  • Exercise

If any of these factors are at play and aren’t addressed then the results also will be lacking.

Our Approach To Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback can be a great tool to help with many of the things listed above. We utilize a comprehensive approach to evaluate brain function: QEEG, oculomotor, and balance testing. We also evaluate factors that would negatively impact the ability of the brain to connect appropriately: nutrition, stress, sleep, exercise, and labs.
